Patent Landscape Dashboard — Help

Getting Started

1

Upload Your Patent Data

Drag and drop an Excel (.xlsx, .xls) or CSV file onto the upload screen. The tool supports exports from Quartet, Lens.org, and PatSnap. All processing happens in your browser — no data is sent anywhere.

2

Explore the Overview

The dashboard opens with a Full Overview tab showing Filing Trends, Legal Status, Top Assignees, and Technology Domains at a glance. Sidebar KPIs update instantly.

3

Add Charts

Click any chart type in the sidebar menu to open it as a new tab. You can have multiple tabs open at once — each is independent with its own local filters.

4

Filter, Click, Download

Use global filters in the sidebar or local filters per chart. Click any data point on a chart to download those specific patents as XLSX with hyperlinked patent numbers. Export chart images as PNG or JPEG.

Supported Data Sources

Column names are auto-detected. The dashboard recognises fields from:

  • Quartet — Publication Number, Priority Date, Assignee, CPC, IPC, Legal Status, Title
  • Lens.org — All standard Lens export fields
  • PatSnap — All standard PatSnap export fields
  • Taxonomy Builder export — Category and Sub-Category columns from the companion tool

Available Charts (12 Types)

📈 Filing Trends — Annual filings by priority year
🔬 Technology Treemap — CPC group distribution
🏢 Top Assignees — Horizontal bar by patent count
🌍 Geographic Map — World choropleth by jurisdiction
🕸 Inventor Network — Collaboration graph
📏 Claim Complexity — Title word count distribution
🔗 Citation Network — Patent relationships
🌡 Tech x Year Heatmap — Filing intensity matrix
⚖ Legal Status — Dual doughnut breakdown
💚 Portfolio Vitality — Alive vs Dead by assignee
📋 Data Table — Searchable patent list with links
🗺 Full Overview — 2x2 summary grid

Chart Tabs

  • Open a chart — Click any chart name in the sidebar menu
  • Switch tabs — Click the tab at the top of the chart area
  • Close a tab — Click the × on the tab
  • You can open the same chart type multiple times with different local filters

Download Chart Images

Every chart card has PNG and JPEG buttons in the top-right corner. Click to download the chart as an image file. D3 charts (treemap, map, network) export at 2x resolution for crisp quality.

Partial Year Handling

The current year is always incomplete. The Filing Trends chart automatically caps at the last complete year and shows a warning note. Other year-based charts follow the same rule.

Global Filters (Sidebar)

The Filters section in the sidebar applies across all charts and KPIs simultaneously:

  • Year Range — Filter by priority date year (From / To)
  • Legal Status — Show only Alive or Dead patents
  • Assignee contains — Text search within assignee names
  • CPC prefix — Filter by CPC code prefix (e.g., G06N for AI)

Click Apply Filters to update everything. Click Clear All to reset.

Local Filters (Per Chart)

Each chart has its own Local Filters button. These filter only that chart, without affecting other tabs or the global view.

  • Click Local Filters to expand the filter panel
  • Set values and click Apply — the chart re-renders instantly
  • Active filters show as coloured chips below the button
  • Click × on a chip to remove that filter
  • Click Reset to go back to the globally-filtered dataset

Local filters stack on top of global filters. For example: globally filter to Alive patents, then locally filter the Assignees chart to CPC prefix G06N — you see only alive AI patents by assignee.

Click Any Data Point to Download Patents

Every interactive chart element is clickable. When you click, the matching patents are downloaded as an XLSX file with hyperlinked patent numbers.

What You Can Click

  • Filing Trends — Click a point on the line → download all patents from that year
  • Technology Treemap — Click a technology block → download patents in that CPC group
  • Top Assignees — Click a bar → download that assignee's patents
  • Geographic Map — Click a country → download patents filed in that jurisdiction
  • Geographic Map (EP/WO badges) — Click the EP or WO badge → download regional filings
  • Claim Complexity — Click a histogram bar → download patents in that word count range
  • Tech x Year Heatmap — Click a cell → download patents for that CPC group + year
  • Legal Status — Click a doughnut slice → download patents with that legal state
  • Portfolio Vitality — Click a bar segment → download Alive or Dead patents for that assignee

What the Downloaded XLSX Contains

  • All original patent data columns with friendly column names
  • Patent number cell hyperlinked to Google Patents or Espacenet (auto-selected by jurisdiction)
  • A View Patent column with a clickable link to the best database for each patent
  • AutoFilter dropdowns on every column
  • Frozen header row so column labels stay visible while scrolling
  • Excel Table format with banded rows — ready for slicers

Patent Link Routing

Links are automatically routed to the best database based on the patent's jurisdiction code:

  • Google Patents — US, CN, JP, KR, CA, AU, IN, TW, SG, BR, and most other countries
  • Espacenet — EP, WO, DE, FR, GB, NL, SE, CH, AT, BE, IT, ES, and other European offices

Assignee Name Normalisation

Patent data often contains variant names for the same company (e.g., "Microsoft Corp", "Microsoft Technology Licensing LLC", "Microsoft Technologies"). The Assignee Groups panel in the sidebar lets you merge these into a single canonical name.

Manual Rules

  • Type the canonical name (e.g., "Microsoft") in the first field
  • Type a variant name in the second field — a dropdown suggests matching names from your data as you type
  • Click + Add Rule to add the mapping
  • Repeat for each variant
  • Click Apply All Groups to re-render every chart with merged names

Auto-Detect Similar Names

Click Auto-detect similar names to scan the top 200 assignees automatically. The tool strips legal suffixes (Inc, Corp, LLC, Ltd, Technologies, Holdings, etc.) and groups names sharing core tokens with over 55% similarity.

Review the suggested groups in the list, remove any incorrect ones, then click Apply All Groups.

Pre-Loaded Defaults

Common groupings for Microsoft, Google, and IBM are pre-loaded when the dashboard starts.

Export XLSX (Top Bar)

Click Export XLSX in the top bar to download the entire filtered dataset as an Excel file. The export includes all original columns plus hyperlinked patent numbers and the View Patent column.

Data Table

The Data Table chart shows up to 1,000 patents in a searchable table. Each row has a Google Patents or Espacenet link (auto-selected by jurisdiction). Use the search bar to filter by any field.

Using with the Taxonomy Builder

For a complete workflow:

  • Export your patent search from Quartet or another patent tool
  • Upload to the Taxonomy Builder to categorise patents into technology themes
  • Export the taxonomy mapping as XLSX
  • Upload the taxonomy XLSX to this Landscape Dashboard for full visual analysis
